About Dr. Frank Straub, Ph.D., LLC

A nationally and internationally recognized leader in targeted violence prevention, school safety, critical incident response, and behavioral threat assessment and management — bringing more than four decades of senior experience across federal, state, and local law enforcement.

A Career Shaped by Leadership and Impact

Dr. Straub began his law enforcement career with the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Diplomatic Security and the U.S. Naval Investigative Service. He served on the FBI–NYPD Joint Terrorist Task Force, directed security and protective intelligence operations in the U.S. and abroad, and trained as a hostage negotiator. He later spent nine years with the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Inspector General, where he led major public corruption and fraud investigations and established the IG's Research and Analysis Unit.

After federal service, he served as the New York City Police Department's Deputy Commissioner of Training and Assistant Commissioner for Counterterrorism. Subsequently, he led public safety and law enforcement agencies in New York, Indiana, and Washington. His work reducing violent crime, strengthening police–community relations, and advancing youth violence prevention has been recognized in Congressional testimony and White House briefings.

Founder of the Center for Targeted Violence Prevention

Dr. Straub founded and directed the National Policing Institute's Center for Targeted Violence Prevention. Under his leadership, the Center conducted reviews of several high-profile mass shootings including the San Bernardino terrorist attack, the Pulse Night Club shooting, and the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and University of North Carolina–Charlotte campus shootings. He created the Averted School Violence database, and supported community-based targeted violence and terrorism prevention programs nationwide. He was an advisor to the development of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's National Threat Evaluation and Reporting (NTER) Master Training Program and a Non-Resident Fellow at the Combating Terrorism Center at West Point.

Consulting, Research & National Engagement

Dr. Straub consults with Safe and Sound Schools, Boston Children's Hospital's Trauma and Community Resilience Center, Moonshot, and law enforcement agencies across the country. His recent work includes developing an e-Guide for School Behavioral Threat Assessment teams supporting students on the autism spectrum, leading a review of the 2019 Christchurch, New Zealand mosque attacks, designing specialized training to counter online extremist recruitment of vulnerable persons, and building and implementing the Battle Creek (MI) Police Department's embedded social worker program.

Dr. Straub holds a BA in Psychology, an MA in Forensic Psychology, and a Ph.D. in Criminal Justice. He is a licensed masters-level psychologist in Michigan, a certified teen life coach, and is recognized as an expert in federal and state courts, with specialized expertise in criminal cases involving persons on the autism spectrum. Dr. Straub has published extensively, testified before Congress, participated in White House briefings, and regularly presents at national and international conferences.
